The proper way to use heat styling tools

Learn how to use flat irons and blowdryers without damaging your hair!

If there’s one thing you must have heard about at least once, is that styling your hair with heat tools can cause damage. Well, that is true, but a lot of women continue to use flat irons and blowdryers every day… Although we don’t recommend using styling tools daily, there are some things you can do to protect your locks from the negative effects of heat!

5 TIPS TO USE HEAT STYLING TOOLS SAFELY

  • OPT FOR IRONS WITH ADJUSTABLE TEMPERATURE
  • You may think that to get smooth or curly hair you need to use extremely hot styling tools. That’s not true at all! Although thick hair needs to be ironed at a high temperature, most hair types don’t need temperatures to be so high.

To make sure you’re using the right temperature, opt for curling and flat irons with adjustable temperatures. This way, you’ll be able to get your hair styled with the right amount of degrees! Remember: the right temperature is the one that allows you to have smooth locks or curls in only one pass.

  • USE HEAT PROTECTORS BEFOREHAND
  • This may be considered the most important tip to make sure your hair won’t be damaged when styling with heat. Using heat protectors is the best way to safeguard your locks from the negative effects of blow-drying and ironing!

A great option of thermal-protectants is RIOBELO’s Rio Magic Smoothing Leave-in Spray. With natural ingredients and anti-frizz technology, this leave-in spray will ensure that your hair is safe! Applying it is super easy: you just need to spray it on your locks, comb it, and style as you would!

  • CHOOSE THE BEST TOOLS AVAILABLE
  • And that doesn’t necessarily mean the most expensive! Just like you should opt for a tool with adjustable temperature, you should pay attention to the type of plates. The material used on the plates has a huge impact on the way the heat is conducted - evenly or unevenly. The best materials available for plates or barrels are ceramic, porcelain, and tourmaline, so try to buy a heat tool made of one of them, ok?

  • DON’T USE HEAT TOOLS ON SOPPING-WET HAIR
  • This tip may seem counterintuitive, especially when we think about blowdryers. However, the worst mistake you can make is blow-drying or ironing sopping-wet hair! If you do that, your hair cuticles will be damaged and your locks will be filled with frizz…

The right way to style your hair is to let it air-dry or let it wrapped on a towel for approximately thirty minutes after you wash it. By doing this, you will decrease the amount of heat needed to style your mane - resulting in less damage to it.

  • REMEMBER TO HYDRATE YOUR HAIR
  • Not only should you take care of your hair before and during the styling, but you should also remember to hydrate and nurture it afterward. You can use hydrating hair masks, deep conditioners, or even natural oils - whatever suits you best!

One of the best products available out there and that we recommend is RIOBELO’s Restoration and Shine Treatment Oil. The brand has two main lines: açaí (image below) and maracujá (aka, passion fruit) - the former is indicated for blonde and color-treated hair, while the latter can be used on all hair types. Just apply 1 to 3 drops of the serum on the palm of your hand and distribute it over the ends of your locks!

As you can see, heat styling your hair requires a few precautions. Using blowdryers or irons every now and then won’t damage your hair a lot, but if you need to heat style frequently, follow the above tips to make sure your locks are smooth, shiny, and overall healthy!
